Russell was born in Peckham, London. He began photographing Peckham and its people in 1977. The experience of living in Peckham helped shape his life, giving him the self-determination to succeed and the inspiration that fired his creativity.
The series of photographs below are from a document of his experience living on the North Peckham Estate. The work is a collection of photos, prose and poetry called 'One year, one season' referering to the invisibility of nature. Published in the Architects Journal in 1987 it won the National Publishing Awards for 'Best use of photography in a magazine'.
